New F-35 Joint Strike Fighters would produce comparable noise levels to the FA-18 Hornet fighter jets they are replacing, the Australian Defence Force has predicted. Defence has released its draft Environmental Impact Statement for the fifth generation single engine fighter jets to be based at Williamtown, north of Newcastle, and the RAAF base at Tindal near the Top End town of Katherine. The fighter jets will be used at Darwin's RAAF base during exercises like Pitch Black held every two years.
